Grew: Concentration is the Issue

Mark Grew feels lapses in concentration are a big factor in Vale's poor run of form

Vale have recently been on a slump of four games without a point and Vale coach Mark Grew has admitted that they are surprised by the recent run after the team started the season well, with a feel good factor emanating out of the changing room.

However, he feels that a lack of concentration is the reason the team are conceding and has said that they will work hard to fix it and get back on track.

Speaking earlier today, Grew said: “It’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves probably for the past ten days. We had a decent enough start and then all of a sudden we’ve gone four games conceding goals the way we have done.

“To be honest on Saturday the way we conceded was scandalous. We’ve gone there with a plan, it’s worked for thirty minutes until we switch off and they score a volley from a throw-in, that’s schoolboy stuff really.

“The second one it was one of three players that had a free header in the six yard box.

“We can’t keep giving teams lifts, we had the crowd quiet, then we switched off and it proved costly.”

After five changes were made ahead of Saturday’s match, Grew feels even more changes will be made again to make a formula that works.

He said: “We were scratching our heads again this morning. We spoke after game and it’s one of those, whoever we’ve put in at the moment has made mistakes.

“It’s a difficult scenario we’ve got this week, but it’s the ones that show something this week that might be in the hat for Saturday.

“As a player you know, because we lost on Saturday, you’re coming into this week, and everybody’s got a chance again.

Grew believes Jordan Slew was very unlucky not to get his second, but believes he will be a good addition to the squad and will hopefully get a few more goals for the club during his time here.

He explained: “He looks like a great addition for us. He was unfortunate not to get the second, how the lad’s got it off the line I still don’t know.

“He looks a threat, he looked lively during this mornings training session, but then again all of them have as well.”
