Yates expecting tough game

Defender taking nothing for granted ahead of replay

Adam Yates is certainly taking nothing for granted ahead of tonight’s FA Cup replay at Home Park and says the lads must be on their toes if they are to go through to the next round.

Vale should have had the tie wrapped up when they were two goals to the better at half time in the first match, but hopefully Vale have learned a few lessons from that game.

Yates said: “It is going to be a tough game – we saw how well they played down here. We didn’t play particularly well but they certainly came back.

“They showed they have got a good heart and a good team spirit and you can never write teams off with that.

“”they kept stretching us in behind and I think more often this year we have been used to playing against one forward and one that has dropped off, rather than a couple who are up there.

“Their two stretched us and got in behind us and late on in the game we got a little bit too deep and we sat back a little bit and probably tried to protect something that we should have been going forward and trying to extend on.

“They are a good side and you know with John Sheridan’s sides that he gets them going. He likes to play football but he certainly gets them going, you could see that on the side of the pitch.

“His style is, let’s pass it and let’s get after people when they have got the ball and that is what they did – they are going well and have got some good players down there.

“It all depends what Port Vale turns up. We know if we are all on our games and get after people and not give them a moment on the ball we are a good side.

“If we don’t and we play with six or seven men, then we are going to get beaten and that certainly can’t happen because it is one that we owe the club.

“I think we should have gone through in the first tie, we were disappointed not to and we have got to go there and make amends.

“We certainly don’t want the game going into extra time, but if needs be we have got enough fitness in the squad to last.”
