But goal scorer says there is room for improvement
Gavin Tomlin was pleased with the Boxing Day result, especially after the team let the travelling fans down a little in Vale’s previous game against MK Dons.
Following the win against Notts County he said: “It was a great result, especially after our last performance. We wanted to come out in front of our home fans and put that right and I think we did that, especially in the second half.
“It wasn’t a great performance from the team last week so we wanted to come out and show we have got a bit more quality than what we showed last week and I think we did that.
“Doug Loft was impressive, especially given the time he has been out – to come back and give that level of performance and put that much energy into the game was fantastic.
“We did really well in the second half, we carved out a few chances and we limited them to a few chances – credit to our defence for that.
“Their goal came from outside the box so it wasn’t really a good chance so I was happy with our defending. There’s still room for improvement, but we are heading in the right direction.
Tomlin netted Vale’s second goal from the penalty spot and appeared to be calm as he stepped up to take the kick.
He said: “I was just trying to be calm and I was thinking about celebrating rather than putting the ball in the net. I just took deep breaths and concentrated on scoring.
“I was a bit nervous really because it hit the post and I thought it wasn’t going to go in, but luckily it went in so I was quite happy.”
