But says there was a lack of enthusiasm on the pitch

Micky Adams wasn’t too happy with his side’s performance at Colchester on Saturday and was prepared to take some of the blame for the defeat.

But at the end of the day it is the players who have to be responsible for how they approach the game and is that isn’t quite right, it means they give themselves a mountain to climb.

Micky said after the game: “To be brutally honest I thought we were poor and I thought the enthusiasm for the game wasn’t there for some reason.

“We started off with a system that didn’t work, and I’ll put my hands up to that, obviously I picked the wrong side, but I am really disappointed with the performance. I think that is as poor as I have seen us for a while.

“When we had seen Colchester down at Gillingham they had three centre forwards who played really close together and I thought I would stifle that a little bit of I could.

“To be honest we were still in that game at nil-nil and some of the things we did were disappointing. We played offsides when they had got time on the ball and that’s really disappointing.

“We are not the sort of side that can step out and catch people offside, we normally stay with the runners, and I thought the level of enthusiasm wasn’t there for some reason, and that was really strange.

“I don’t want to go overboard about our performance, let’s not get carries away with it, but I think it was a poor performance.

“We’ll study it and analyse it and get back onto the training ground next week and work at it again.

“We’ve got an honest group of players and if I say they have lacked enthusiasm, I am sure they will take it on the chin and respond next week.

“We’ve got a home game next week and the onus is always on the home team to attack and I think we have got attacking players, although at the minute I don’t think it is working up front. Whatever combination we play, it’s not working, so we will have a look at that as well.

“It’s a tough league and I still maintain that we will do okay, but when you lose games of football you often analyse yourself and the team that you have put out there and the way you have played. We will do that, we will lick our wounds and start again next week.”
