Port Vale FC are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder, George Byers, following the expiration of his contract with Championship side, Sheffield Wednesday.
Byers, 28, puts pen to paper on a three-year deal that will see him remain at Vale Park until at least the summer of 2027.
The right-footed central midfielder began his career within Watford FC’s Academy, aged 7, and went on to make his senior debut for the club in January 2015 against Charlton Athletic.
The young Scotsman would make the decision to join then-Premier League side, Swansea City, upon the conclusion of his deal with Watford. Byers would go on to make 65 appearances for The Swans across five seasons, scoring eight goals and assisting two.
Following a brief loan spell with Portsmouth, Byers would join Sheffield Wednesday, where he would play under now-Vale manager, Darren Moore.
Across his three-year stay with The Owls, the energetic midfielder would become a favourite amongst the Wednesday faithful, scoring 14 goals and assisting 6 in 78 appearances, playing an important part in their promotion from League One in the 2022/23 season.
Speaking of George Byers, Port Vale FC Manager, Darren Moore, said:
“George is a player who I know really well from my time at Sheffield Wednesday. His energy, drive and quality on the ball will be attributes that are appreciated by our supporters.
“We have met with George a few times over the last couple of weeks and although there has been strong interest at levels above League Two, he has quickly bought into the wider project that is ongoing here at Vale Park and what we are trying to build.
“Positive competition in all positions is vital and George will come in and add even stronger competition for places amongst our already-competitive midfield options.
“I am really looking forward to welcoming George into our squad as we continue to build towards next season and beyond.”
