Spirit is good

Gaffer confident we can get a decent result

Saturday’s opponents, Swindon Town, have lost their last two matches, but that doesn’t mean a thing as far as Vale boss Micky Adams is concerned, he knows it mean nothing.

He said: “We will take that with a pinch of salt, we have got to turn up. The last time we went to Swindon we got a pasting – we didn’t show up that day.

“Having said that, we played against a very, very good Swindon team that was celebrating promotion, so they perhaps had more on the game than we did.

“This time right it’s slightly different, they are a developing side as I like to think we are, we are learning lessons on a weekly basis and we are getting better.

“Our spirit is good at the moment, our fitness levels are good and we have enjoyed the two wins – we want to make it three wins on the spin, but it’s never as easy as that, we have got to turn up and perform.

“They are a side that have got a lot of youngsters in there, a lot of youngsters with Tottenham connections and if you have ever played against a Tottenham side, they like to pass the ball and play, they have been brought up the right way.

“They have got a couple of old heads, Darren Ward at the back springs to mind and they have got Nile Ranger at the top of the pitch who has had Premier League experience with Newcastle, so he’s a threat.

“They are the type of team that if they get on top of you and pass the ball where they want to pass it and at their leisure they will cause you problems.

“But the emphasis from our point of view is to not let them do that, play at our tempo, make sure we ruffle a few feathers and show the sort of spirit we have shown recently.

“We gave Gillingham a goal start on Saturday before we got really going and I wouldn’t like o do that at Swindon – they are the type of team that, if they can get their noses in front, can be very dangerous and stamp their authority on you.

“It’s important that we pick up the tempo of the game early doors, that we impose ourselves on them, that we do the right things at the right times, everybody is switched on at set-pieces either for or against.

“If we do that I am confident that we can get another decent result and I don’t see why not because we are looking a confident bunch at the moment.”
