Johnson up for the challenge

Goalkeeper ready to push Neal

Goalkeeper Sam Johnson will be pushing Chris Neal harder than ever for a first team place after the young goalkeeper signed a new two-year contract with the club.

Johnson said: “I am really happy to get the chance to prove myself next season and hopefully getting a few more games to prove what I can do.

“Chris had a great season last season and he is someone I can learn a lot from, hopefully I can push him a bit further next season.

“I have been pinching little ideas from him but I really want to push him as far as I can next season.”

Johnson played his only match of the season in the Johnstone Paint Trophy tie against Walsall, the match ended 2-2 but the tie will be better known for Johnson’s heroics in the penalty shoot-out, the 6ft 7in goalkeeper saved three and scored the decisive 22nd penalty.

After that heroic night Johnson is keen to play in next season’s competition.

He said: “I’d like to think that in the Johnstone Paint I would hopefully get another chance to showcase myself again.”

With Vale in the family Johnson was happy to please his family by signing for their club.

He added: “My brother is a really big Vale fan so he is happy, everyday he was asking when are you going to sign, when are you going to sign.

“I will be looking forward to getting back with the lads, but I am not into the running.”
