Assistant manager buzzing after the game

“That’s what the FA Cup is all about. We don’t do anything the easy way. We said to the chairman before the first game we would get a replay and win that so we get the double whammy.

“The lads have done tremendous tonight. It was like a horror show in the first minute, Chris (Neal) has made a ricket.

“We got back in the game and then we have given another goal away, so we made it difficult for ourselves and I thought the first half performance was a poor performance.

“The gaffer has gone in at half time and not really had a go at them; he just said ‘What are we about as Port Vale players? We are better than this.”

“He spoke to them in a sensible and constructive way and the second half speaks for itself.

“The character shown by players out there when we were down to ten men – we worked hard and there are some good people in that dressing room.

“Everything he said at half time was constructive/ He told them ‘let’s go out, we know we are better than this , we have got to be positive, we have got nothing to lose.

“It was a bit like Plymouth in the first game – two-nil down with nothing to lose, let’s have a go at them boys.

“In the first fifteen minutes of the second half they couldn’t get the ball off us and we had two or three chances and then we were wondering whether it was going to happen for us.

“But then when Ben came on and got the equaliser, for me there was only going to be one winner and that’s the way it panned out.”
