League Two Opponents - Swindon Town

League Two Opponents - Swindon Town

Who Are They?

Swindon Town Football Club were originally founded as Swindon AFC back in 1879. They then changed their name to Town in 1883 and that is how it remains today. The County Ground, Wiltshire has been home to the club since 1896 and it hosted Premiership football during the 1992/93 season.

After turning professional in 1894, Swindon Town entered the Football League in 1920. They are now an established side within the English game and a period of success was had between 1968 and 1970. In 1969 they won the League Cup title and gained promotion to the second tier.

How Did They Perform Last Season?

The 2016/17 season was Swindon's fifth consecutive campaign in League One, but that stay came to an end as they suffered relegation to the fourth tier. With only 11 wins to their name come April 30th, the Robins finished 22nd with just 44 points to their name.

As well as struggling in the league, Swindon failed to impress in cup competitions and supporters at the County Ground were left with very little to cheer about. Despite holding Queens Park Rangers to a 2-2 draw after extra-time, the R's won on penalties to knock Swindon out in the first round. Non-League Eastleigh then beat them in the same round of the FA Cup and Luton Town ended all hopes of any Checkatrade Trophy success.

Our Last Meeting

The Valiants last faced Swindon Town back in March as Michael Brown's men picked up an important set of three points. Despite falling behind to a Nicky Ajose goal, Vale bounced back to equalise just a minute later through Chris Eagles.

During the second period, JJ Hooper then bagged a brace to hand the hosts a 3-1 lead. Luke Norris did pull a goal back for Swindon late on to ensure it was a nervy final few moments, but the Vale Park crowd were left celebrating a narrow victory.
