Port Vale are back home this weekend as they welcome Crawley Town to Vale Park for their third fixture in the 2018/19 Sky Bet League Two Campaign. We take a look back at previous results with the Red Devils.
The last time Harry Kewell’s side visited Vale Park, the Reds ran out 2-1 winners thanks to Josh Payne and a Nathan Smith own goal. However, Neil Aspin will be looking for his side to replicate their heroics on last year’s opening day of the season, as the Vale put three past Crawley, winning 3-1 on the day.
Michael Tonge, Antony Kay and Dan Turner all scored their first goals for the club as Vale gained their first three points in the 2017/18 season.
Debutant, Tonge, was involved from the off as he scored the opener. His 20-yard free-kick took a wicked deflection on its way to goal, leaving the Crawley stopper helpless but to watch the ball drop into the centre of his goal.
The midfielder was again at the heart of the action as his crossed free kick was turned into the far corner by his midfield partner, Kay.
Vale’s perfect start to their league campaign had one blotch, as shortly after the restart, Enzio Boldewijn’s mazy run ended in a goal that brought the Red Devils back into the tie.
However, a Dan Turner header put the game beyond Harry Kewell’s side as he notched his first goal in a Port Vale shirt.
Having experienced a mix of emotions so far this season, Vale fans will be hoping their side can replicate the impressive opening day victory at Vale Park just a few weeks ago.
