Saturday’s home fixture against high-flying Luton Town will be Port Vale’s final taste of action in 2017, but how did the Valiants fare last time they played the Hatters?
Michael Brown and his Vale side travelled to Kenilworth Road back in September hoping to end a run of five successive defeats in Sky Bet League Two.
That unwanted record couldn’t be halted, however, as the hosts sealed all three points despite Vale having a couple of chances to find the scoresheet themselves.
Luton took the lead in rather fortuitous fashion on 38 minutes as Ben Whitfield deflected a Luke Berry strike beyond the reaches of Sam Hornby.
After the restart, Whitfield flashed a volley just over up the other end before Anthony de Freitas called Marek Stech into a flying save from a free-kick.
Those missed opportunities proved costly as Jack Stacey doubled the Hatters’ advantage on the hour mark. David Worrall and de Freitas then went close late on, but they couldn’t stop Vale falling to defeat.
