Kelly Reflects On Goal Of The Season Strike

After winning the Club’s Goal of the Season award, Port Vale winger Sam Kelly talked us through his super strike against Coventry City.

The 22-year-old, who was also nominated for Young Player of the Year, picked up his trophy at the end of season dinner on Saturday.

Following the presentation, he spoke to the press about the goal which made sure he claimed the accolade.

“Before I came on the gaffer said to go on and get the goal,” he began. “He put me on the right so I always knew that I was going to come on and have a shot with my left foot.

“I received the ball from Ben Purkiss and I already knew I was going to shoot. It was probably a bit greedy from me. I managed two beat two of them, I just thought I’d let it go and the rest is history.”

Kelly has made a habit of scoring spectacular goals since his arrival last summer.

He has won the Club’s Goal of the Month award on three occasions during his first season in Burslem.

One strike in particular that came close to beating his goal against Coventry was a slaloming run and finish in the 1-0 home win over Bury.

“They were two different goals to be fair,” he said. “There was a lot more dribbling in the Bury one.

“I just carried on watching it back over and over again to be fair but then when I did that against Coventry everyone was saying it was better than the Bury one.

“Some people were saying the Bury one was better than the Coventry one but I’m happy with both of them to be fair and I’m sure they’ll make the DVD at the end of the career.”

Reflecting on the 2015/16 season as a whole, the midfielder said he wouldn’t change a thing and is targeting more game time next term.

“I think I’ve been managed well,” he added. “The gaffer has looked after me, given me game time here and there.

“Looking back I wouldn’t change it probably, I just hope we can kick on next season and I can get more games hopefully.

“Of course every player wants to be starting and it is my intention to come in, in the best shape and be starting the games.”
