Assistant boss wants maximum return

Mark Grew is looking past Saturday home game on Saturday and despite the odds being against us, still has desires on finishing the season as champions.

There will be no taking anything for granted here at Vale Park. Everybody is aware of how difficult this weekend’s game against Northampton is going to be, but Grew wants six points from the two final games.

He said: “We may need three points to secure promotion, but we are looking for six points out of our final two games because you never know.

“If Gillingham slip up because they are partying there they may have switched off and we might be able to take advantage.

“We are aiming to get six points because not only are we looking to get promoted, we are also looking to win the championship.

“Martin Allen is an excellent manager and he has done brilliant for Gillingham, but you can’t watch your players 24 hours a day.

“No matter how much you tell them not to, they know they are promoted and you don’t know how they are going to react.

“They want to win the championship now and no matter where they go to the teams they face don’t want them to it achieve it against them.

“It is like on Saturday at Rochdale, we went two-one up, the last thing they wanted was for us to get promoted at their ground because it is a horrible feeling.

“We had that last year at Swindon. They were partying and we were in there feeling down and it‘s not a nice thing.”

Saturday’s opponents, Northampton Town, have slipped up in their last two games, picking up just one point from six, but Grew expects them to come here on Saturday going flat out for the win.

He said: “We know on Saturday it is going to be a battle. I think the football will go out of the window and it will be the one who is bravest and who can make the least mistakes on the day.

“We are expecting Northampton to bounce back. Aidy is not going to allow them to feel sorry for themselves, they still have two games to play and I am sure they will be looking to win both of them."
