Port Vale's reserve side ran out 3-0 winners over Walsall on Tuesday afternoon with Jack Stobbs, Dan Turner and Anthony de Freitas all getting themselves on the scoresheet.

With minutes being handed to a number of first team players, the game provided a perfect opportunity for the individuals who featured to impress the onlooking Michael Brown.

At 23 years of age, de Freitas captained the team and he also fired home the final goal of the game. Speaking after the full-time whistle, the French midfielder was quick to praise the application of his teammates.

He said: "Personally I am feeling very good, but as a team we played well and enjoyed it out there, scoring a lot of goals too.

"Tyrone (Barnett) missed his penalty, but it was great to see him come back and we are focused now on the game against Coventry."

Now in his second season with Vale, de Freitas was delighted to wear the captain's armband and he revealed that he relishes the responsibility.

"I am happy to be called upon. We have a lot of young players like me, but I was still one of the older ones," he said.

He added: "It's very good for me, I enjoy having the responsibilities so I am happy with that.

"This is my second year here so it's like a new job for me - I am no longer the new foreign player. I am happy here, it's very good to help the younger lads."

After finding the net to wrap up the scoring just before the hour mark, de Freitas is eager to transfer that form into Vale's competitive fixtures.

He said: "I scored today and I am very happy about that, but now I have to score during big games and I hope to do that."
