We Take a look through the sides that we will come up against in League Two next season.
Who Are They?
Originally formed as Singers FC in 1883, Coventry City will be one of the most notable teams The Valiants will come up against next season. The Sky Blues didn’t make their Football League debut until 1919, but eventually went on to become one of the most iconic teams in English football. Their largest achievement came during the 1986-87 season where they lifted the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2.
Coventry City fans were rewarded a day to remember last season when they lifted the EFL Trophy in front of 74,000 people at Wembley. Their 2-1 win over Oxford City allowed Coventry to become first-time winners of the trophy. It’s been a frustrating few years for City who have seen themselves go on a downward spiral after being relegated from the Premier League during the 2000-01 season, but will hope for a successful campaign this time round.
How Did They Perform Last Season?
Coventry City were relegated to League Two after finishing 23rd in League One. Current manager, Mark Robins, was unable to keep The Sky Blues up during his second spell at the Midlands-based club. Despite all the controversy surrounding issues off the pitch, City rewarded their fans with some silverware as they became triumphant in the EFL Trophy, beating Oxford United 2-1 at Wembley.
In other competitions, Coventry saw an early elimination in the EFL Cup where they lost 6-1 to Norwich City in the Second Round, just after beating Portsmouth in the first. Elsewhere, a 4-0 defeat to Cambridge United also saw their exit in the FA Cup after reaching the Second Round.
Our Last Meeting
Our last meeting with The Sky Blues came in March of last season when Coventry defeated Port Vale 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena.
Nathan Smith’s 74th minute header was not enough for Michael Brown’s side, after two first-half goals allowed City to pull through with all three points.
Goals from Kyel Reid and Kwame Thomas saw Mark Robins’ side win his first game since his reappointment.
