As the fixture release date draws nearer, we’ll be taking a look at the newly promoted and relegated sides will be joining us in League One next season.
Today, we take an in-depth look at Sky Bet League Two play-off winners AFC Wimbledon.
Nickname: The Dons
Founded: 2002
Stadium: Kingsmeadow
Manager: Neal Ardley
Last season: 7th in League Two (Promoted via play-offs)
The Dons secured promotion to the third tier for the first time in their history with a 2-0 win over favourites Plymouth Argyle at Wembley.
Having finished seventh in League Two, Neal Ardley’s side were forced to take on Accrington Stanley, who had barely missed out on automatic promotion, in the semi-final.
A 1-0 win at Kingsmeadow followed by a dramatic 2-2 draw in Lancashire meant Wimbledon earned their place in the showpiece event under the arch.
After a largely uneventful first half, the Dons scored in the 78th minute through Lyle Taylor before cult hero Adebayo Akinfenwa netted a stoppage time penalty to ensure the victory.
The club’s ascent into League One means they will take on MK Dons next season in what should be a tasty affair. When Wimbledon FC moved to Milton Keynes it left a sour taste for many supporters.
Port Vale have faced Wimbledon just four times previously. The quartet of fixtures all took place in League Two and the Dons currently lead the series with two wins.
