We Take a look through the sides that we will come up against in League Two next season.
Who Are They?
Founded in 1912 as Abbey United, the club didn't become Cambridge United until 1951. From 1970 through to 2005 they competed in the Football League, but relegation at the end of the 2004/05 season meant they dropped into non-league where they stayed for nine years. League Two football then returned to the Abbey Stadium, however, as the U's gained promotion from the Conference.
In recent years Cambridge have enjoyed some good results in the fourth tier, but their goalless draw at home to Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round in January 2015 will live long in the memory. They lost the replay at Old Trafford by a three-goal margin, but the revenue earned from that cup run has aided the club's ambitions to progress.
How Did They Perform Last Season?
As well as progressing to the third round of the FA Cup before being beaten by Championship outfit Leeds United, Cambridge United enjoyed a positive season in League Two. Shaun Derry's men ended the campaign sitting 11th in the division, just four points off a play-off spot.
After nine league games, the U's actually propped the division up as they sat bottom of the table. However, improved form saw them rise to seventh at one point before some inconsistencies meant they were to fall away from the play-off picture. They also made it to the second round of both the EFL Cup and the Checkatrade Trophy, where they lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bradford City respectively.
Our Last Meeting
With Cambridge falling out of the Football League for a lengthy period, Vale's last meeting with the U's came way back in February 2002 as Stephen McPhee scored the only goal of the game to hand the Valiants victory at the Abbey Stadium.
An evenly contested game saw both teams spurn numerous chances, but McPhee's close range header in the first half was enough to separate the teams.
