But we had our moments, says Micky

Micky Adams was pleased with Vale’s performance in the home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but felt the goals conceded could have been avoided.

He was, however, quick to recognise the quality of the opposition, who showed their class at times in a game in which both sides played their part in entertaining Vale’s biggest league attendance since March 1998.

The Vale boss said: “We have played against a very good team, and that’s the first thing to say, well done to Wolves, who showed what they are all about, particularly in the second half, but I felt we had our moments.

“We went a goal down, which I was disappointed with. I thought it was a sloppy goal we conceded. I am always disappointed with any goal we concede, but at a goal down there was nothing in the game really.

“They looked like they had got a foothold on the game, they upped their tempo a little bit and we were finding it difficult to deal with their movement, but as I said, we still had our moments.

“Just before the second goal we’ve had a couple of great chances, the keeper has made a great save and we have hit the post.

“Like I have always been saying, you have got to take your chances at this level. Unfortunately we have come up against a good goalkeeper who has coped with everything and saved everything today.

“At three-nil our heads dropped a little bit by then, but I give credit to Wolves because they are a good side.

“After the game I said to the boys, when a goal goes in against you, what you have got to do is regroup, make sure you redouble your efforts and make sure they don’t get another goal, because you’ll get chances.

“You do get chances, regardless of the fact that’s a back four, other than Batth and the goalkeeper, that were playing in the premier League two seasons ago. We have created chances against good back four.

“Games like we have had today won’t define our season. The season is never going to change from the start against Brentford until our last league game.

“We are in a fight to stay in this division and we are not under any illusions so whilst we have lost today and it looks as though it is a heavy defeat, I am going to take a lot more positives out it.

“I need to look at the team and look at certain individuals in the team at the moment, because I’m still not sure that everybody is firing on all cylinders, but that is part of management.

“I am still irritated by the goals, I think they can quite easily be avoided. You have got to have a real will and desire to keep clean sheets and I don’t think we have got that at the minute.”
