As the team’s five day training camp in Scotland drew to a close, the gaffer expressed his pleasure that “everything went really well”, and looked towards the upcoming season.

Askey spoke about how positive he believed the camp had been for the players, allowing for the new signings to further bond with squad, and more training time in new surroundings to be achieved.  

New signing Callum Evans, and youngster Ryan Campbell-Gordon were picked out by the boss, as they have been able to strongly integrate within the squad ahead of the opening day fixture, away at Colchester United.

The high performance levels have also impressed, with the gaffer saying how selection will be difficult due to the high level of completion now amongst the team, leaving him happy with what has been achieved.

He said: “Everything went really well, weather was good, accommodation and facilities were fantastic, so it’s a good way to finish pre-season.

“We can spend 24 hours a day with each other, and that enables us to do three sessions in a day.

“Callum [Evans] will be a good edition and provides competition in the full-back position and also in midfield.

“You need that [competition] throughout the team, not only at full-back, you need competition up-front, midfield and throughout the team.”

With new signings already providing a strong level of competition within the squad, Askey refused to rule out further additions, but believes his current squad size, 22, is ideal going into the season.

The manager also believes that the team now have focus and a strong sense of direction, dealing with one of the biggest issues he felt when he first arrived at the club.

With such a strong pre-season behind the squad, Askey is looking forward to the new season and hopes that their lack of injuries can be sustained, with Cristian Montano the only concern ahead of the final pre-season game against Bury.  

He said: “There’s a lot more discipline, the players we brought in, they want to play for the club and improve and do well.

“[I’m] as satisfied as you could be, there’s only going to be Monty [Montano] not available Saturday, and he should start training next week properly.

“The main thing is to get through pre-season injury free and, barring unforeseen circumstances on Saturday, or in training, the majority of the players should be free and available for selection.”
