- Tom Pett, Matty Taylor, Funso Ojo and Aaron Donnelly nominated
The Valiants added five points to our total in League One in the four matches we played in March, securing victory against MK Dons, earning a point against both Fleetwood Town and Portsmouth, either side of a 3-2 home defeat to Burton Albion.
Darrell Clarke’s side scored in each of their March fixtures, kicking the month off with a 1-0 victory against MK Dons thanks to Aaron Donnelly’s first goal for the club, before Matty Taylor also got off the mark in the Valiants’ 1-1 draw at Fleetwood Town.
Midfielder Tom Pett had been voted Player of the Match by sponsors in the win against the Dons, before also winning the award against Burton Albion as the Valiants fell to a 3-2 defeat to the Brewers.
Taylor’s second goal of the month preceded Funso Ojo’s wonder strike at Portsmouth as Clarke’s side concluded the month with a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park.
The Nominees
Tom Pett
The midfielder featured in every minute of the Valiants’ March fixtures and was widely praised for his performances by supporters and teammates, earning back-to-back match sponsor’s Player of the Match awards at Vale Park.
Pett will likely bring up his 300th career league appearance in April and will be looking to finish the campaign strongly in what is his first season at this level.
Matty Taylor
Although his early Vale appearances showed his clear know-how and understanding of the level, Vale supporters are beginning to see the clinical nature of the striker, who is approaching 200 career goals.
A regular marksman in League One throughout his past four seasons in the third tier, Taylor added to his goals tally for this season with strikes against Fleetwood Town and Portsmouth in a productive month.
Funso Ojo
Continuing to impress in his debut season at Vale Park, Ojo’s second Valiants goal came in the weekend’s draw at Portsmouth as he fired in a wonderful 25-yard effort to double Darrell Clarke’s side’s advantage at Fratton Park.
He started each of the Valiants’ March fixtures and will no doubt be key in the run-in as the Vale look to climb into the top of the League One table.
Aaron Donnelly
After scoring his first league goal to help the Valiants to a 1-0 victory over MK Dons in the opening game of the month, the young defender has continued to be a regular feature in Darrell Clarke’s back three.
The left-sided defender assisted Ellis Harrison’s opener in the defeat to Burton Albion and has continued to show his potential as he passed double figures of Vale appearances during March.
