- Clarke: “It was [a good point]; it was a tough encounter, I thought we had some good chances in the game, everybody played their part in an entertaining League One game.”
Port Vale manager Darrell Clarke said his side’s strong mentality and character was once again on show as the Vale twice came from behind to secure a point at Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday evening.
Tom Conlon’s second-half header cancelled out Lewis Wing’s goal on the hour mark, after James Wilson’s late first-half goal had levelled up following Anis Mehmeti’s early opener for last season’s League One Play-Offs finalists.
Reflecting post-match with iFollow the Vale as his side collected their tenth point from losing positions in League One this season, Clarke said:
“It was [a good point]; it was a tough encounter, I thought we had some good chances in the game and everybody played their part in an entertaining League One game.
“It wasn’t ideal circumstances – to concede that early – and we work hard to try to start games brightly but they scored a good goal. You’re looking for the fight that we know we have within the group, the character has been shown over a period of time and we got the goal that we probably deserved just before half-time to get ourselves back in it.
“It isn’t a fluke; the mentality within the group and within the side is very good and the players that are coming off the bench – the gamechangers – are being very effective when they do come off the bench.
“The two goals conceded from outside of the box we are disappointed with but we have created the better chances through the course of the game, in general we defended very well against a very, very tough team – Sam Vokes is a handful. They get the ball forward, they work hard and we competed very well and had the better chances with our open play.”
