Port Vale Football Club can confirm that Lewis Cass sustained an injury during training that has cut his season short.
The 21-year-old suffered a freak injury in training on Thursday afternoon and it has been confirmed that he has suffered two ligament tears in his ankle.
The defender joined the Valiants on loan from Newcastle United in July 2021 and made 22 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal.
Manager Darrell Clarke said: "It's a real real blow for us and Lewis to be honest, it looks like he'll be going back to Newcastle for his rehab and we wish him well.
"He has been outstanding for us, he's served the club with massive credit, the fans loved him, I loved him and we all wish him a speedy recovery"
