Port Vale striker James Wilson says his side executed their gameplan brilliantly to secure a fine 2-0 win at Plymouth Argyle in League One on Friday evening.
Wilson’s double helped Darrell Clarke’s side to end Argyle’s 100% home league record, while the hosts failed to score for only the second time in 26 matches in all competitions this season.
Speaking post-match with iFollow the Vale, Wilson said:
“We came out with a firm gameplan, we knew what we were doing from the start and I think we executed it brilliantly.
“There were probably five or ten minutes in the first half where we were under the cosh a bit but we saw it out and again ended up coming away with the three points.”
Manager Clarke spoke post-match about an animated half-time with his players as he looked for a little bit more quality in the transition and Wilson said the players’ love for their manager’s enthusiasm for the players to do well is something they want to repay.
“I think we all have the respect for the gaffer, we all love him and we all want to work and do well for him and he is the same to us.
“We try and give him 100% on a weekly basis and maybe the first half was slightly lacking in some areas, but I think we came out in the second half and managed to close the game out well.”
When asked about notching his third and fourth goals of the season, Wilson explained that assistant manager Andy Crosby has been working with him to ensure he benefits from goalscoring opportunities with his positioning.
“Cros pulled me in, in the middle of the week and said stay in the middle of the box, that is where all your goals are coming from and again two of them have come from in between the posts tonight,” Wilson explained. “The staff and the analysts do a lot of work regarding the gameplan and how we can improve as a team and individuals. I think they have done a brilliant job.
“I had a half chance in the first half, one-v-one against the last defender and could have done better but I am delighted to get the two goals and help the team to get three points.”
