Port Vale have the opportunity to respond to Tuesday’s defeat against Scunthorpe United, when we travel to top of the table Newport County on Saturday. You can find all of the key information regarding the game, below.
Fixture: Newport County vs Port Vale
Competition: Sky Bet League Two
Date: Saturday 21st November
Kick-Off: 3:00 pm
Venue: Rodney Parade
Referee: Carl Brook
Port Vale
Manager: John Askey
Form: WLWLL
Top Goal Scorer: Mark Cullen, Tom Pope, Devante Rodney, Tom Conlon (2 goals)
The Valiants will be looking to pick themselves up from Tuesday’s home defeat at the hands of Scunthorpe United as well as last Saturday’s devastating defeat against Tranmere Rovers with a statement victory at the home of the league leaders on Saturday.
Despite the two defeats, the Valiants still sit just outside the play-off spots on goal difference, and could find themselves as high as fourth place should we take all three points at Newport. Vale lost out at the Rodney Parade last season to a single goal from Jamille Matt and will be looking to make amends.
John Askey has no new injury concerns for the Valiants with James Gibbons being the only player unavailable for selection for the next few weeks.
“If we keep playing the way we are playing, eventually we’ll start to get results.”
John Askey, Port Vale Manager
Newport County
Manager: Michael Flynn
Form: WWLWL
Top Goal Scorer: Tristan Abrahams (7 goals)
Despite having played a game less than most other teams in the league, the Exiles are sitting pretty at the top of the league, one point clear of second placed Cambridge United.
Michael Flynn’s side have had a storming start to the season, but did lose their last league fixture following a 3-2 defeat at Carlisle United, so the Valiants may be able to take advantage of a potential drop-off in form from the Welsh side.
One to watch: Tristan Abrahams
The 21-year-old forward has had a fantastic start to the season, scoring seven goals already this campaign, after winning the Exiles Young Player of the Season award last season.
The young striker from Lewisham started his career at Leyton Orient, after progressing through their youth academy, before being sent out on loan to Cambridge City in November 2016.
In July 2017, Abrahams secured a move to Championship club Norwich City, where he was sent on loan spells back to Leyton Orient as well as Exeter City and Yeovil Town, before signing for Newport in July 2019 following his release from the Canaries.
And the forward has really hit a purple patch this season, being his club’s top goalscorer, with his tally of seven goals helping push his side to the top of the league.
Talk:
John Askey: “When we play the better teams it tends to bring out the best in us, so let’s hope that’s the case again.”
Michael Flynn: "They [Port Vale] are a strong team, know the league well and have got good players. They have got experience and a very good team and it's going to be tough."
