Port Vale manager John Askey says he was pleased with a point in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Walsall, despite leading the game twice.
Leon Legge and Scott Burgess’ first-half goals put Vale in the lead at half-time, but goals from Fulham loanee Elijah Adebayo and a second-half strike from Josh Gordon levelled the game for Walsall and meant that Vale would have to settle for a point.
“I suppose we’ve got to be pleased with the point” said Askey.
“We weren’t as good as we were last week, but it just brings us down to reality, so we just move on to the next one now.”
Despite not being able to get the three points, Vale did extend their unbeaten run to six games without defeat.
2,307 Valiants made the short-trip to Walsall, to push the team on in their bid to reach the play-offs.
“It’s fantastic to see so many (Vale fans) and the noise levels were great” said the proud Vale boss.
“It keeps the players going and they can feel that everybody is behind them.”
Meanwhile, Valiants midfielder Manny Oyeleke says it felt really good to be back in the team, following his lengthy spell on the side line.
“It felt really good (to be back in the team) because it hurts as a player not doing what you love, and you feel like you’re not helping the team like you want to” said the 27-year-old midfielder.
“Every minute until the end of the season is a blessing for me.”
And Oyeleke was also pleased that Vale managed to get a point out of a tough game.
“I think it was one of those gritty games, that we’ve done well to get a point out of”
“We were not at our best today, we’ve been at our best for the past three or four games, so I think we can be forgiven for not being at our best today.”
“I think it shows the character that we’ve got in the dressing room to still get a point out of the game.”
Oyeleke was also quick to point out the support of the Vale fans.
“I didn’t realise how many fans we had until we scored!”
“We had a big following which helps us out, I’m not sure the fans realise how much it helps us to hear their roar.”
Both manager Askey and player Oyeleke now turn their attentions to Vale’s next game at home to Scunthorpe on Saturday.
“We always fancy our chances at home, and if you win your home games, you’re going to be in a play-off position” said Askey.
“It’s as big as any other game (next week’s game)” said Oyeleke.
“We’re not looking at it as anything big or spectacular, we’re just going to work one hundred percent hard to get the three points.”
