Port Vale manager John Askey reflects on an eventful first year in charge of the Valiants.
Askey was appointed on February 4, 2019, taking 16 points from 16 games and ultimately ensured Vale’s status in the Football League remained intact.
Impressed with the job Askey carried out in steering Vale away from relegation, owners Carol and Kevin Shanahan made resolving the manager’s contract situation a priority following their takeover last May.
There have been many memorable moments during Askey’s 365-days in charge, ranging from the gaffer’s first victory against Mansfield to the dream FA Cup tie with holders Man City.
“On the whole it’s been an enjoyable 12 months, I must be one of the longest-serving managers now! Hopefully we can continue to improve.
“You’re always learning in the job, that’s what makes it enjoyable – it’s always changing. The goal is always the same and that is to win football games and be successful.
“Every day I come in I feel lucky and I’m not just saying that. It’s a great honour to be the manager of Port Vale. It’s something I didn’t think would happen and I hope it continues for a long time.”
Highlight 2018-19 season?
“The first one is obviously to keep the club in the Football League. There was a lot of good points – I think the Crewe game was probably as well as we played that season.”
Highlight 2019-20 season so far?
“There’s been a lot of good games this season. Probably the highlight at the moment is the Man City game and getting to that. Though obviously we didn’t win it, it was still one to remember.”
Target for the next 12 months?
“To get promoted. That’s the main thing and that is always the case. Whether we do that or not, that’s going to be the aim.”
