Manager John Askey praised his team for how well they have been performing away from home this season, and is hoping they start getting rewarded for their efforts with three points on the road.
The Valiants picked up their first away win of the season on Tuesday, defeating Macclesfield Town 3-2, and the Vale are now aiming to collect their first league win on the road this campaign.
Although his side are yet to get three points on the road in the league, the gaffer has been pleased by the way his side has been playing and doesn’t think there is need for worry at this stage.
Last season the Valiants were more successful playing away from Vale Park, but this season have been able to resolve that, currently going unbeaten in all five games at home this year, and Askey is confident the form can be transferred to away games.
The teams drive and ambition to win has been a highlight for the boss so far, with games such as Plymouth and Mansfield showcasing that attitude, and Askey spoke about how they are capable of beating any team they face.
He said: “The performances have been decent, we might not have won but we’ve got results away from home, Tuesday night was our first [away] win so I’m not too concerned.
“Last season the results were better away from home, so what we’ve got to do is get a happy medium, obviously our home form’s improved massively, now we’ve got to concentrate on the away performances.
“The league’s very much a muchness, but it’s about us and if we can perform how we have done in the majority of games then we can get a result.”
The main concern that has been surrounding the team in recent weeks has been the large quantity of injuries that have been sustained, but the gaffer was able to shed some light on when certain players will be returning, with the likes of Manny Oyeleke and Jordan Archer working their way back into the team.
Despite the injuries, the gaffer again expressed how well he feels the players who have played have performed and how competition for places has been integral to the attitude of the team.
With players returning it makes the job of the boss a harder one, as he has to pick who should start each game, and Askey will have to do just that tomorrow as the Vale travel to Leyton Orient and search for their first away league win of the season.
“He’s [Oyeleke] had one training session and 20 minutes on Tuesday, but we should be able to get him involved at some stage but it’s probably too soon to start him.
“The players who’ve played have done really well so we don’t have to rush anybody back with the squad that we’ve got.
“I think whoever you play, you respect every team in the league, but it’s [Leyton Orient] a game we can go into and if we preform then we feel as though we can get a result.”
