Amoo a player for the opposition to fear this season says Leon Legge

Leon Legge has joked that he's going to have to take half of David Amoo's goal bonus if he continues to perform the way he is.

Amoo signed on a free this summer after departing Cambridge United at the end of the last season and was recommended to manager John Askey by Leggey after the pair played together at The U's.

The London-born winger has now featured and scored in all three pre-season games he's been able to play in since arriving at the club. His latest was a 25-yard screamer against Fleetwood Town last night which secured the Vale a 1-0 win over the League One side.

Now reunited as teammates, Leon Legge believes Amoo is a defender's worst nightmare to play against especially in the latter stages of a game and is certainly pleased to see the winger in a Vale shirt for the upcoming season.

"He's a direct winger and can play on both sides. He's powerful, pacey and he'll want to nick in with a few goals and that's what we lacked last season.

"He's a good addition to the squad and hopefully we can see a few more goals like that. He's going to be a tricky player to play against this season and hopefully, he scares a few defences this season.

"In the late stages of the game, you don't really want someone that can run like he does so I definitely think he's a good addition for us."

To be able to run at the defences as David Amoo does and to keep going throughout the 90 minutes quite clearly requires a good level of fitness, something Leon said he wanted to see improve when the players had their end of season meeting in May.

Manager John Askey hasn't been shy in admitting that the players have been and will continue to be worked hard throughout pre-season in preparation for Colchester United on the 3rd August.

With the players entering into the third week of their pre-season programme, Leggey admits that he's seen a major improvement in the fitness levels which gives him confidence ahead of the start of the season.

"There are a few more games left and it's all clicking well. The fitness levels are a lot better than last season so long may it continue.

"It's a long season and in this league, you can end up playing 50 plus games because of the cups. I'm definitely feeling the benefits of what we're doing at the moment and what John's putting on.

"That was one thing I said in one of our meetings is that we need to be fitter than we were last season and the gaffer's put together a good pre-season for us."
