Nathan Smith reflects on his 100th consecutive game at Wycombe

Nathan Smith has expressed his delight after making his 100th consecutive start for Port Vale during the 0-0 draw with Wycombe Wanderers.

Smith’s MOTM performance secured a vital point for Neil Aspin’s men against the promotion-chasing Chairboys as he had to deal with Adebayo Akinfenwa throughout the game.

Speaking after the game, the Madeley-born defender said it was an achievement that he has had his eye on for some time.

“I’ve been looking to get there for a while,” he said.

“I’ve done it now, but if I could swap it for safety in this division they I would!

“Hopefully I can build on it now and get some more to that tally.”

Speaking about yesterday’s result at Adams Park, “Smudge” was proud of his side to put on an excellent display for over 200 Valiant supporters who made the journey South.

He said: “I think we played well.

“We’ve done well the last couple of games and if we keep playing like that, I’m sure that we can pick up the points required for safety.

“Going to Wycombe is definitely a tough ask, they’re pushing for promotion so to come here and get a 0-0, you can build on it.”

Smith knew the task in hand ahead of the clash with Akinfenwa and co, but was proud of the whole squad in an excellent all-round show.

“We all knew what was to come,” he added.

“He’s (Akinfenwa) the focal point of their team as we try to play through them, but we stayed high and gave him at least chance as possible to bring the ball down and play.

“Everyone worked hard with people coming into the team, so overall, we did well.”
