Port Vale host Cambridge United this Saturday as they look to kick off their 2018/19 EFL League Two campaign with a win. We look back at how the Valiant’s have previously fared against Saturday’s opponents.
On a day that saw Tony Bellew defeat former Heavyweight World Champion David Haye by TKO, Neil Aspin’s side received an unfortunate knock-out blow of their own, having been overcome 5-0 at the Abbey Stadium.
However, Aspin will be looking for a repeat result of the last time the U’s visited Vale Park.
The Valiant’s took all three points on the day last season, with a 2-0 win.
Christian Montano was the hero on the day, as a brace from the Colombian proved to be the difference on the day.
Having knocked on the door a few times in the first-half, Montano’s first goal of the game came on the stroke of half-time. Neatly making space for himself, the Vale forward smashed the ball across Cambridge goalkeeper David Forde, who could only watch the ball nestle into his far post.
Vale were well worth their lead at half-time and just minutes after the restart, it was 2-0.
A Nathan Smith flick from David Worrall’s corner, fell kindly for Montano who was left with a simple tap-in from 2 yards out.
It was a comfortable end to the match, as Aspin’s side claimed their third home win of the season.
With all the disappointment of last season’s final game of the campaign, Vale will be eager to put things right this Saturday at Vale Park.
