Two first half goals for the home side at the Valley saw Vale drop all three points against Charlton Athletic to ensure a long and miserable trip home for the Vale supporters who had made the journey to cheers their side on.
Vale had bossed the game at times, but in truth never really looked like they would get anything from the game, as they failed to trouble the home side where it mattered, in the final third.
Vale made three changes to the starting eleven for their first game at the Valley since September 2001, as Vale took on managerless Charlton Athletic for the second time in a month.
Anthony Grant missed the game through suspension, whilst Sam Hart was forced to miss the game after suffering from concussion. Martin Paterson was the other one to miss out, making do with a place on the bench.
In came Kjell Knops, returning to the left back position vacated by Hart, with Anthony de Freitas and Sebastien Amoros coming into the Vale midfield with Alex Jones occupying a sole striker’s role.
Vale began the game on the front foot, hoping to take advantage of any lack of confidence in the home ranks after Charlton sacked manager Russell Slade in the days leading up to the game.
The home side showed plenty of character however, not allowing Vale to boss the affair and it was Charlton who went closest to opening the scoring.
The home side won a corner kick following a close range save by Alnwick and when the ball came in from the right, defender Jason Pearce got up highest at the back post to plant a header against Vale’s crossbar.
Vale were playing arguably the better football, but it was the home side who looked the more dangerous of the two sides and it was they who broke the deadlock on the half hour.

Vale almost hit back three minutes later when Alex Jones brought a save from Declan Rudd, with a strong shot on the turn from just outside the area.

Vale made their first substitution at the start of the second half when Martin Paterson came on for Sebastien Amoros.
The home side were the quicker out of the traps at the start of the second period, knowing that a third goal would surely kill off any hopes of a Vale comeback.
Vale stodd firm, awaiting their chance and began to take control of the game once again, pushing the home side deep inside their own half.
There were problems for the Vale when Jerome Thomas went down on the Vale left. The decision was quickly made to replace him, though Vale played on with ten men for a few minutes before Quentin Pereira was sent out to join his team mates.
It was a case of déjà vu as Vale again looked the better of the two sides without even threatening the Charlton goal. Addicks’ ‘keeper Declann Rudd was more or less a spectator.
