Coming Down: Charlton Athletic

Coming Down: Charlton Athletic

As the fixture release date draws nearer, we’ll be taking a look at the newly promoted and relegated sides will be joining us in League One next season

Today we take a look at Charlton Athletic, who finished third from bottom in the Championship.

Nickname: The Addicks
Founded: 1905
Stadium: The Valley
Manager: Russell Slade
Last season: 22nd in the Championship

Charlton ended their four year stay in the second tier of English football with a disappointing 2015/16 season.

The Addicks had three different managers over the course of the campaign – Guy Luzon, Karel Fraeye and Jose Riga.

They started the season with a promising 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at the Valley but they didn’t have too many similar results on their way to relegation.

It’s already been a busy summer at the club, who have appointed former Leyton Orient and Cardiff City boss Russell Slade as their new manager.

Slade was installed as the Bluebirds’ Head of Football just a few weeks before he took the job at Charlton but he decided to make a swift return to management instead.

Port Vale haven’t faced the Addicks in a competitive capacity since 2001 when they lost 2-0 in a League Cup match.

The last league meeting between the sides was in 2000 when they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Vale Park.
