Port Vale boss Rob Page said the success of the 3-5-2 formation he implemented at Gillingham was credit to his players.
Ajay Leitch-Smith and Carl Dickinson both scored in the first half to secure the victory against the promotion hopefuls at Priestfield Stadium.
The manager decided to go with a new system using wing backs and three centre halves which worked to full effect for the second goal.
Speaking to Valiant PlayerHD after the match, he said: “I was really pleased with it and the lads have got to take all the credit for that.
“We’ve had a couple of days, we worked on it Thursday with them, we did a little bit of attacking play with them yesterday and the second goal epitomized it.
“It’s a great ball from Purks, from right wing back to Dicko at left wing back and he goes through and keeps a calm head and scores.
“Ajay scored a world class goal as well so all in all the lads have got to take the credit and to buy into it in a short space of time is credit to them.”
