Remie Streete was delighted to get back into match action after completing 45 minutes in the team’s 5-2 victory at Alsager Town last night.
The defender - who signed from Newcastle United in the summer – started his first game of pre-season after being forced to sit out Saturday’s victory at Newcastle Town through injury.Speaking to port-vale.co.uk after the 5-2 triumph, Streete said:
“It is nice to get 45 minutes, I think most lads had the same ideas just get through the game and hopefully score a few goals and get back to being on the pitch.
“No-one likes running around the track so I think once a few games come, we all get to do what we enjoy instead of running. We get the best of both worlds, get a feel for the ball again and get your running and your fitness in as well.
“We started sloppy but the class showed off in the end and we managed to get the win we expected.”
The 6ft2in centre-back produced a dominant performance at the back with some vital aerial interceptions and was partnered by Richard Duffy in defence, but Streete admits that he is unsure whether the duo will be Rob Page’s first choice combination when the season starts on August 8th.
“I played with him last season and he’s obviously a good defender he talks a lot, we’ll just have to see when the real pre-season games come next week when we play Notts County and teams like that so I think we’ll have a better idea then.
“It’s good to get games like this to get minutes in your legs and then they are the real games that the lads are looking forward to.
“I think most lads play 45 tonight and 45 tomorrow just to get used to playing 90 minutes over two days to reduce the risk of injuries so I think it is a good idea.
“We will just build it up and against Notts County, Getafe and the other pre-season game I think we will have a closer picture of the team that should start the season and the lads fitness levels getting them to 60-70 minutes in those games.”
Since signing for the club in June, Streete has been followed through the Vale Park doors by fellow new signings - Sam Foley, Sam Kelly, Ben Purkiss, Anthony Grant and Uche Ikpeazu – and the defender is impressed with what he has seen of them so far.
“It’s good for the new lads coming in aswell to see what they can bring, I’ve seen bits of them in training but it’s hard to show in training.
“Some people are training players, some people do it out on the pitch but at the end of the day out on the pitch is what matters for the new lads and that is where we aim to show it.”
Someone who has also impressed the centre-half during the opening two games is forward, Enoch Andoh.
“Training is his sort of thing, small games showing off his technique his dribbling and things like that, it is just the transition into the game which he showed today that he can do.
“He’s got ability, when you see him in training, he does a lot of good things but it is one thing doing it in training but thankfully he did it out on the pitch tonight.”
