Vale have got to earn the right to play says Yates

Yates feels dressing room spirit can make a difference

Defender Adam Yates has warned tonight’s visitors will be no pushovers. He doesn’t believe The Iron’s league position is a true reflection of the quality they have in their squad.

With new boss Mark Robins in charge, Scunthorpe will be revitalised and they will come to Vale Park believing they can get a favourable result, so everybody needs to be on their toes.

Yates says: “We have got a big game against a side who we know are probably in a false position. We have got to go out there and play well and keep passing the ball like we have been doing

“We have seen at this football club what a change of manager does for you. They have got some experienced players and they have got Jennison (Myrie-Williams) who we know can win a game.

“We have to stop those type of players and earn the right to play. That might mean us getting after people early on and then when they game settles, start to pass it.”

Despite the perceived strength in depth at Scunthorpe, Yates says he believes Vale can match them, and that, added to the dressing room spirit can be vital as the Valiants aim to lift themselves up the League One table.

“I was looking at their bench from the weekend and they have got a lot of experience on there, a lot of players that can come on and cause you harm, but so have we.

“We have got a big squad here now and it is a squad that has got a good team spirit and I think ultimately that is what will take us away from the bottom four.

“Two or three wins can take you into the top half of the table, which is where this football club wants to be. It has been stated that we want to get promoted and that is the case.

“The first aim is to remain in this league and consolidate and if we can do that for two or three years and then get promoted, then so be it.”
