Reserves Go Top of Table with Campion Performance

Vale’s second Reserve visit to the Greenhous Meadow saw old faces, in the shape of Anthony Griffiths and Ashley Vincent, and new ones in the Vale side with Harry Panayiotou finally making an appearance and trialists Aziz Deen-Conteh and Enoch Andoh featuring. Dean-Conteh was formerly with Chelsea and is a Sierra Leone International who played in Greece last season and Andoh is Ghanaian and previously played for Limassol in Cyprus. This was a clash between the top two sides in the League, so whoever won would be top.
minute.thThe first opportunity fell to Vincent as he was fed down a channel to run at goal, but as Johnson advanced Vincent curled a shot well wide of the near post. Vale replied as Lloyd had 2 good touches to beat his defender and his drive to the near post was pushed for a corner. Vale almost took the lead from the corner as Lloyd and Moore played some neat inter-passing before Moore’s shot crashed against the far post and the rebound was side-footed wide by Slew. The game was end to end as Johnson saved well low down before another Vale attack saw a shot from Slew well saved by Burton and it was only the 10
minute as Vincent drove forward and slipped a ball through on the right for Vernon to slot home at the near post. Robertson was in the book soon after for pulling an attacker back; this led to a free-kick 30 yards out and from this a well rehearsed move saw Vincent crash the ball over the bar from 10 yards.ndDeen-Conteh was next in action as he put in a god tackle to stop a cross being delivered and then it was action at the other end as a strong shot from Slew was beaten away. A push by Griffiths on Slew saw a quick free-kick that allowed Panayiotou to set up Slew but his shot was blocked for a corner and as Shrewsbury broke from this Johnson was out quickly to claim the ball at the feet of an attacker. Campion was next in action as he turned and flashed a shot just past the post and then Panayiotou had a shot blocked for a corner on 20 minutes. Vale kept pushing forward but no other chances arose unti just before the half-hour mark when Panayiotou had a chance to run at goal but he pulled his shot wide of the far post. A passing move between Slew and Moore saw Slew brought down just outside the box as he tried to find space to shoot. Campion touched the ball to Veseli whose shot flicked off a defender to go just wide of the far post for a corner. In the next attack Slew just failed to get a toe to a lose ball and the ‘keeper collected to avert any danger. The home team were trying to get back in the game but saw a shot comfortably saved by Johnson. With eight minutes left substitute Anderson was free on the left to run at goal but Johnson advanced and narrowed the angles causing him to shoot wide of the far post. Johnson pulled off another good save as Shrewsbury made a late push to salvage something from the game.
Vale saw out the remaining time to inflict Shrewsbury’s first League defeat of the season. With two minutes left on the clock Lloyd set Andoh off on a run down the left and he cut in, beating his defender but his low cross hit the back of a retreating defender’s foot and diverted it from the Vale attackers waiting for a tap-in.
