Vale romped into the second round of the Coca Cola Cup with a resounding 5-1 win over next door neighbours Crewe Alex in their own back yard, to make the aggregate score 6-1 to the Valiants. The Alex wouldn’t have seen what was coming when Dele Adebola squared the tie when he put the home side in front after 15 minutes. Ian Bogie gave Vale the overall lead when he levelled on 26 minutes and the visitors never looked back. Additional successful strikes from Jon McCarthy, Martin Foyle, Tony Naylor against his former club and substitute Lee Mills ensured an easy passage into the next round.
