Vale warmed up for their third round FA Cup home tie with Derby County with the 5-0 demolition of an Ipswich Town side who came to Vale Park boasting a 13-match unbeaten run. 8,700 fans watched as Vale started the New Year in style, Darren Beckford putting the Valiants in front after 19 minutes, smashing home from 15 yards. Backford hit another beauty to double his and Vale’s tally and Robbie Earle put the result beyond doubt just before half time. Nicky Cross made it four after 54 minutes and then substitutes Ian Miller and Paul Millar combined, with the former completing the misery for the Suffolk outfit with Vale’s fifth goal.
