Saturday's game is extra special for the Davis clan
Saturday’s game against South Cheshire rivals Crewe Alexandra has become more then a derby match with split loyalties within the Davis family.
With Dad Steve in charge at Crewe, he will have a son playing for both sides and no doubt the rest of the family will not know quite who to cheer, come the big kick off.
Harry will be playing for the visitors and of course his brother Joe will line up in the heat of the Vale defence, but Vale Assistant Manager Mark Grew has no fears that Joe will be giving his everything in the white shirt.
He said: “It will be a bit strange for Steve Davis on Saturday and it will certainly be strange for his wife, who is going to be here with one son on one side and one on the other.
“She will probably be hoping for a draw I would think. There will be strange emotions there for the Davis family on Saturday.
“Joe will be fully focussed on the game and if there is a fifty-fifty with him and Harry, I know Joe will go straight through him, there’s no question about that.
“When families come into it, Joe will be totally focussed on football, he doesn’t mind who he kicks and I am sure if it is his brother he will have an extra smile on his face.
“I would like to say I wish Crewe well, but I don’t. If we have to put a knife in their back then that is just the way football is.
“Me and the gaffer went to watch them in the FA Cup against Wycombe on the Tuesday night when they got beaten quite easily and they looked a poor side.
“But everybody saw on the following Saturday the way they performed against us, they put a good shift in against us and made it a good local derby.
“We know because they are in the bottom three they are fighting for survival and it is going to be a tough game.
“I know Steve (Davis) very well and he will have them up for it. Crewe have changed over the past eighteen months when you used to be able to play against them and bully them, that doesn’t happen any more.
“All that had gone out of the window now with Steve, who is a good manager and he is a bit like Micky, he won’t allow his players to pull out of challenges, that’s for sure.”
