Carl Dickinson: “We Deserved Something”

Skipper Speaks To Press After Defeat

  • Dickinson reckons Vale deserved at least a point
  • Captain thinks performance gives side something to build on
  • Now looking to push on and push for top half

Carl Dickinson believes that Port Vale were unlucky to come away empty-handed after a 1-0 defeat to high-flying Swindon Town on Sunday.

A 56th minute goal from Andy Williams was enough to take all three points at the County Ground but captain Dickinson thinks that the Valiants can be proud of their performance.

Speaking to the assembled press after the match, he said: “I think we deserved something, but it wasn’t to be.

"To come away from a team that’s been on form and put in a performance like that, it’s encouraging.

“We rode our luck at times but I think we gave a real dogged away display today. We knew they were going to have a lot of the ball, but I thought our shape was pretty good.

“I think they overplay at times and make a few mistakes and we thought if we could catch them on the counter, we would knick something and I thought we were going to.”

Dickinson also believes that, despite the defeat, the nature of the performance can help the side push towards the top half.

“It gives us a platform to build on. If we can keep putting in performances like that, then we should come away with a few away points," he added.

“I think we should be around where we finished last season. I think we’re good enough to do that and we should look to try and finish there and build on that. We should be looking towards the top half of the table onwards.”
