Grew looking for strong finish

Mark Grew says he doesn’t believe in ‘what-ifs and although some people may talk about the games they could and should have won, he isn’t one of them.

He is willing to talk about how will the team have done overall, however, and the win against Walsall on Saturday which saw the Vale complete a rare double over the Saddlers was particularly pleasing.

He said: ’“It was a bit special. We were made aware that we hadn’t beaten Walsall at home and away for some time and it was a well-earned result.

“I thought we played particularly well on the day, we stopped them from playing and we thoroughly deserved the result.

“There are a lot of things we have been working on- we have been disappointed with conceding too many goals with soft free kicks and I thought we handled it well on Saturday.

“Sam (Johnson) has probably made two or three saves that you would have expected him to save – I would have been disappointed if they had gone in and we limited them to goal scoring chances.

in this league – we have had our blips, but I think when you look back over the season I don’t think we have been overawed by this league and when we are at our best we can compete with anybody in this league. “We have shown all season that we can compete with the best

“Every team can say they have dropped eight or ten points or whatever that they shouldn’t have, but I take that with a pinch of salt, the league table doesn’t lie.

“Even after the defeat against Bristol City the gaffer said, ‘listen, we have had a blip here, but we still want to finish the season as high as we can’ and that hasn’t changed.”
