Gaffer upbeat despite disappointment

If Micky Adams was disappointed with the result against Leyton Orient, he remained upbeat after the game following a Vale performance which deserved at least a point out of the game.

He said: “We are bitterly disappointed with the result, but I think we can take an awful lot of positives out of the game.

“We didn’t want to come here and sit back and try to nick a result, we had a positive approach to the game and it looked as though we were going to get something out of the game.

“Having said that, some of the goals we conceded were absolutely criminal and if you are going to make mistakes like that, especially against the better teams then you are going to get punished.

“I pick a team and keep a clean sheet and grab three points at Carlisle, but with the greatest of respect, Carlisle and Leyton Orient are two different propositions.

“I came here with a positive intent, I didn’t want to sit back and try and frustrate them because I know they have got decent players.

“They have got good forward players who are going to cause you problems anyway, so I thought our best form of defence today was to go out and attack them, which we did.

“It was difficult changing the side, but we are going to have to do that from time to time.”

Louis Dodds netted his first goal of the season to give Vale the lead midway through the first half and looked to be enjoying the freedom as he linked the midfield and attack.

Adams said: “We wanted him to be the link between the front players and the midfield and when we lost the ball to sit in there and make it difficult for them to play through us.

“He did that, got on the ball and scored his goal, which is all you can ask from him really, I thought it was a good performance.

“We had to dig deep in the first five or ten minutes of the second half and we rode our luck a couple of times, but we came back into the game again, got our goal and I felt we were going to go on and win the game.

“We have shown today that going forward we will cause a lot of teams a lot of problems, but it doesn’t matter who you play, if you are going to give them three goals to win a game of football, you have got no chance of winning yourselves.

“We scored two today against the league leaders and that should have been enough to have got a point at least, or to have won the game, but our defensive frailties have let us down again.”
