Vale looked to be well in command at half time, going in at the break with a 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Paul Harsley (27 mins) and Danny Whitaker (38 mins), but the second half pained a different story.
The home side pulled a goal back five minutes after the interval through Luke Joyce and Simon Hackney netted a brace with the space of four minutes to send Vale home empty handed.
