Adams praises the new league leaders
Micky Adams was full of praise after his side toppled leaders Gillingham from their perch yesterday and said his side certainly deserved the three points after a good battling performance.
“It was a battling performance to a man, they put their bodies on the line and had a bit of luck, but you need that.
“When you come to places like this against a good side you need a bit of luck going your way and we certainly had that in the second half.
“We could have wrapped it up even further with Ben Williamson going clean through, but it was a good game, a cracking game.
“We changed the team around. I though the lads that had a rest in the last game looked sharper for it and so I think the team selection was justified.
“Racing into a two-goal lead I was really disappointed with the goal we conceded immediately after we scored the second because it looked as though we were reasonably comfortable at that stage, with the front two causing them problems.
“I was disappointed to concede that goal because you are always on the back foot and they’re never out of the game.
“Gillingham don’t give you a minute’s peace and I can see why they have been top for a long time. They get the ball forward early and put your back four under pressure, but we stood up to the test.
“I thought Lee Hughes link up play with Tom Pope was excellent and I saw a useful combination out there and the fact that both of them scored as well helps.
“They are both different types of players. Hughsy made a lot of good runs of Popey – he knows that Popey is going to win headers, and he worked extremely hard.
“Ben Williamson was slightly unlucky not to start after his performance last week. He came on and looked very, very sharp and lively and offered a threat in behind as their back four tired. I think we have got some decent strikers at the club.”
