"I think it is important that we go in and try to win every game"

Vale will be going all out for a win this evening against Walsall (kick off 7.45pm) to try to generate some extra revenue for the club, but then again, Mark Grew says the lads will be trying to win every game, whatever the competition.

Grew said: “I think it is important that we go in and try to win every game, whether it be league or cup, and it is important for the club to get through into the next round.

“If you can do that it gives you a chance to play the top guns if you can get through the next one, but not only that, if you win games it breeds confidence, so we are going into the game fully focussed.

“Our record in this competition is not great over the years, but I remember when I was playing we drew Liverpool away and that was a great occasion.

“We drew 2-2 and brought them back here and got a great crowd. We got a good hiding, but at least we made a bit of revenue from it.

Grew is more than aware of the threat the Saddlers pose. Vale’s assistant boss watched them for himself only last week and the club had them watched again on Saturday.

He said: “I can’t see Walsall changing the way they play. I watched them last week and they still try and play football, they are all confident on the ball and they had a great result against Tranmere at the weekend.

“We had them watched on Saturday and the front two, Craig Westcarr and Milan Lalkovic caused loads of problems for Tranmere, but whether or not they are thinking of making changes, we will have to wait and see.

“It is a big game and a local derby for us and we know we will be coming up against another footballing side and though Villa beat them convincingly last week, they still tried to play football.

“People say they over-achieved last season but I think Dean Smith did a fantastic job and it looks like they have started of where they finished.”

If tonight’s game finished all-square after ninety minutes then there will be extra time and then penalties if needed, something Vale are keen to avoid.

Grew continued: “We don’t want extra time at this stage of the season because the games are coming up thick and fast, but if we get through we get through, it doesn’t really matter how we do it.

“People were excited after the game on Saturday and they were saying how they enjoyed the game and how competitive we were, so we are hoping for a decent crowd tonight.”
