Vale to honour Sneyd Colliery Disaster victims at New Year’s Day fixture

PVFC Remembers

Port Vale will pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Sneyd Colliery Disaster, at our upcoming New Year’s Day fixture against Cheltenham Town.

This match has been designated as our Port Vale Remembers fixture, a heartfelt tradition where we honour those with a connection to the club who have passed away in the last 12 months.

The Sneyd Colliery Disaster, which occurred on New Year’s Day in 1942, claimed the lives of 57 miners and remains one of the darkest days in our community’s history.

A memorial service will commence when both teams leave the field of play following their pre-match warm-ups; it will be led by our club chaplains, Rev Ashley Cooper and Father Andrew Swift and will culminate with a minute’s silence prior to kick-off.

Port Vale CEO, Matt Hancock, said: “Our Port Vale Remembers fixture is an integral part of the club’s calendar. It represents a moment to come together as a community, to honour those who have played a part in our story and remember the events that have shaped our history.

“We were contacted by a supporter recently about marking the anniversary of the Sneyd Colliery Disaster and recognised that we could and should be doing more. As of this season, we will commit to including those who lost their lives in the Disaster as part of our annual tributes each year.

“On New Year's Day, as we mark the anniversary of the Sneyd Colliery Disaster, we reflect not only on those who lost their lives, but also on the strength and resilience of the Burslem community.”

We invite all supporters to join us at Vale Park to remember and honour those who have left an indelible mark on our lives and our club.
