Defender and match-winner delighted to get off the mark for the Vale and help Darrell Clarke’s side to a 1-0 win against Exeter City at Vale Park.
- Will Forrester | “A thoroughly deserved win”
- Port Vale defender discusses the Vale’s 1-0 win over Exeter City and his first goal for the club
- Forrester: “1-0s are probably the best wins; clean sheet, a little scrappy goal for myself, but they’re the best wins for me!”
Port Vale defender Will Forrester felt the Vale earned Saturday’s 1-0 victory against Exeter City, with the three points seeing Darrell Clarke’s side climb above the Grecians into the top half of the League One table.
Speaking post-match after his first goal for the club sealed victory, Forrester said:
“It was really pleasing to get the three points; we have had a few games without a win so it feels nice to finally get the win and I think we thoroughly deserved it, especially first half – I thought we played some good stuff, stuck together and saw the game out.
“1-0s are probably the best wins; clean sheet, a little scrappy goal for myself, but they’re the best wins for me! I was delighted to score; I thought it was a good team move, finished off with the goal.
“The way in which we play, the centre backs like to overlap so I want to add goals or assists and set pieces I want to be a threat and try and score more goals.”
And Forrester says ending the Vale’s winless run should reinstall some confidence within the squad, especially with a clean sheet.
“I think it’s one of the biggest strengths of the squad [keeping belief in what we’re doing],” he explained. “I think we have been unlucky in some games and in others we know we haven’t been good enough.
“I think getting this win hopefully gives us the confidence to go on a run and see where we end up.
“In the last few games we have conceded far too many goals; it was nice to keep the clean sheet and go on to win the game.
“It is something we always work on as a defensive unit; you want to try and keep the ball out of the net as much as possible, so it is something we work on all the time and we want to keep getting better.”
