A strong Port Vale side secured their place in the Second Round of the Staffordshire Senior Cup with a 4-1 win at Newcastle Town.
Dennis Politic scored twice, in between Thierry Small and Liam McCarron strikes, as Darrell Clarke’s side completed a comprehensive win and added match minutes to a number of players who didn’t feature from the start in Saturday’s League One defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.
Aidan Stone started in goal, with a back three of Sammy Robinson, Connor Hall and Lewis Cass in front of the stopper. McCarron and Politic started as wing-backs, with Tom Pett and Harry Charsley in midfield. Tommy McDermott and Dan Butterworth supported Small up front.
Butterworth fired over in the early stages before Small opened the scoring on 12 minutes with a turn and finish in the area.
Politic dragged an effort wide and Small went within inches of a second as the half hour approached, flashing wide after a nice turn in the area.
McCarron sent a good chance over when Politic cut back for him before the Romanian forward doubled the Vale’s lead with a wonderful curled effort from distance.
Hall saw an effort deflected wide before half-time, before Small fired against the bar in the early stages of the second-half.
The Vale were in control throughout and Politic scored his second and Vale’s third just over 20 minutes from time when he fired in after a driving run.
Politic was the provider for McCarron two minutes later as the on loan wing back slid home at the back post.
Substitute Holdham scored a late consolation for the hosts seven minutes later, with the Vale progressing to the second round of the Staffordshire Senior Cup.
