Port Vale assistant manager Andy Crosby said the Vale were deserved winners as they secured top spot and a home tie in the last 32 of the Papa Johns Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Wolves U21s on Tuesday night.
Late goals from Mal Benning and Mipo Odubeko sealed the win for Darrell Clarke’s much-changed side from Saturday’s League One with Forest Green Rovers, and Crosby praised the professionalism of the players as they maintained their 100% record in the competition.
“We spoke pre-game about the rewards this competition brings,” Crosby said. “It brings game time to players who aren’t perhaps featuring in league games and gives them a chance to prove something. Every time you go out onto the pitch it gives you chance to promote a message to the manager.
“The bigger picture is that we want to go all the way in this competition and go back to Wembley so it was a good night, three wins out of three, three clean sheets, more game time and goals for attacking players.
“Well done to Wolves, they set up with a low block, sacrificed the ball and looked to play on the transition from deep but we stuck at it, kept moving the ball, and eventually wore them down and it was a well-deserved win.”
