Classic Fixture
Division Two, The Suit Direct Stadium, Saturday 12th March 1994, Hartlepool United 1-4 Port Vale
Vale were going for promotion from what is now called League One and faced a tricky trip to relegation threatened Hartlepool.
Hartlepool took the lead in the 11th minute when a long ball was hooked home by John MacPhail. Vale were level within four minutes though when a corner was flicked across by Martin Foyle and Phil Gilchrist headed it past his own ‘keeper.
Vale went in front in the 31st minute when David Lowe, on loan from Ipswich, curled a cross into the box, but ‘keeper Steve Jones missed it and it dropped into the net. The Valiants stretched their lead in the 57th minute. Foyle sent Nicky Cross clear and he rounded Jones before slotting it into the net in front of the delighted away fans. It was 4-1 five minutes from time.
Lowe played the ball through to Neil Aspin and he found the net with a low shot from 20 yards and celebrated with a running aeroplane impression.
